Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much is the application fee?
The application fee is $200.00 for Pre-Kindergarten and $150.00 for Kindergarten through Fourth grade.
2. Can the fee be waived?
The fee may be waived, but you must contact the Office of Admission for details.
3. After paying an application fee, what feedback will I get at the end of the process?
After paying an application fee, what feedback will I get at the end of the process? Each family will receive a summary report about their child, but depending on the grade level the reports will be different and sent at different times. Families who apply for Pre-K, Second,Third or Fourth grade will be sent a one page summary report with their decision letter in March. This summary will be written by a therapist licensed by the State of Texas who is not an employee of The Lamplighter School. The feedback will contain general information about your child’s academic skills. Families applying to Kindergarten and First grade will receive a summary of results from CATS in January or March depending on when your child was evaluated.
4. Is Financial Aid available?
Financial aid is available to families who demonstrate financial need. Our admission process is need-blind and financial aid is determined after a child is accepted to the school. No paperwork needs to be filled out prior to decision letters being mailed.
5. How many spaces are available?
Availability is always subject to change, but the average acceptance numbers are as follows. 3 year old (72), 4 year old (15), Kindergarten (6), First (5), and Second,Third and Fourth (subject to availability).
6. Is preference given to sibling and alumni children?
When all factors are considered, preference is only given to applicants who have current siblings at Lamplighter as well as applicants who have siblings or parents who graduated from Lamplighter. These applicants go through the same admission process. 7. What age does my child need to be to attend your school?
Children applying to Lamplighter must be at least 3 years of age by September 1.
8. Should I have friends send additional recommendation letters for my child?
The only material required is the application signed by the parents or guardians, the current teacher evaluation, and material collected from the child's visit to Lamplighter. Additional recommendation letters may be sent but are not placed in the applicant's file or read by the committee members.
9. Can my child visit the school before their scheduled visit?
Because of our open classroom environment, we do not invite children to come to the school prior to their application visit. The Office of Admission does recommend that you mention the scheduled application visit to the child in advance to help prepare them for the experience.
10. Can parents come for a visit?
All families are invited to participate in a comprehensive orientation tour of the school. Tours begin early in the school year and may be scheduled by calling 214-369-9201, ext. 347.
11. When will decision letters be mailed?
All decision letters will be mailed March 11, 2011.
