Technology

Lamplighter’s technology program leverages innovative tools and abundant resources to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.

Technology is used intentionally and creatively as a learning tool, thoughtfully integrated into classroom experiences from Pre-K through fourth grade.

Students develop digital literacy and problem-solving skills through integrated classroom projects, while Lower School students also participate in dedicated classes led by the School’s Academic Technology Coordinator. Through these experiences, students build the confidence and competencies necessary to use technology responsibly, creatively, and effectively.

Technology Resources

Sets of grade-level laptops and iPads are housed in mobile carts located in shared grade-level spaces, the Erik Jonsson Media Center, and the Eastin Family Innovation Lab, where science, environmental science, Innovative Projects, and woodworking classes take place. These devices are used by students in Kindergarten through fourth grade to support classroom learning and integrated technology projects.

Pre-K students are introduced to early coding concepts through the use of Bee-Bots during center time and whole-group instruction. In addition, all classrooms are equipped with electronic display boards to enhance instruction and collaboration.

Designing Worlds in VR: A Fourth Grade Capstone

One of the capstone experiences for Lamplighter fourth graders is the design and creation of a Virtual Reality (VR) game during their senior year. By this stage, students are well prepared for the challenge, equipped with the technical skills, creative thinking, and social-emotional growth cultivated throughout their Lamplighter journey.

Building on years of coding instruction, students collaborate in four-person teams to invent an original fictional story and bring it to life in VR. Each team member assumes a distinct role—storywriter, character designer, environment designer, or coder—providing authentic experience in creative collaboration and project management.

Over eight weeks each spring, teams develop a shared narrative, design a hero, construct an immersive world, and use block-based coding to animate their interactive experience. The process emphasizes co-creation, iteration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
