Spanish

Lamplighter’s Spanish program inspires curiosity while broadening students’ perspectives and understanding of the world.

Students learn through a comprehensive, immersive approach in which instruction takes place in the target language, building proficiency naturally over time. Instruction is sequential and cumulative, developing vocabulary in context through authentic materials such as illustrations, manipulatives, games, songs, role-playing, and reading. Students gain age-appropriate vocabulary and grammar skills while fostering a love of language learning and respect for other cultures.

Early Childhood Spanish

Pre-K, Kindergarten, and T1

Pre-K students attend Spanish classes twice during the six-day rotation. Spanish is presented in context using high-interest themes, movement, and active, hands-on lessons. Students listen to theme-based stories and songs, and puppets and other visuals are used to reinforce vocabulary.

In Kindergarten and T1, students attend Spanish three times during the six-day rotation. Students learn new songs to reinforce vocabulary. In addition to building vocabulary, students are introduced to reading and writing in Spanish. Students read simple, repetitive books that are integrated into lessons. Fun videos with songs and movement help students learn vocabulary and frequently used sentences.

Early Childhood students are also introduced to Hispanic cultures and studies of Spanish-speaking countries such as Mexico and Ecuador.

Lower School Spanish

Grades 1 - 4

The Lower School Spanish program develops listening and speaking skills while building cultural awareness. Students in first through fourth grade attend Spanish classes three times during the six-day rotation and learn through role playing, cultural activities, learning centers, games, arts and crafts, music, cooking, and other hands-on experiences.

In third and fourth grades, students expand their learning through cultural research projects and presentations about Spanish-speaking countries. Students prepare digital and written work and share their projects with families during Un Viaje Por El Mundo Hispano.

Lamplighter graduates leave well prepared to continue Spanish studies in middle school and beyond.
