Barn & Animals

Chickens and farm animals are a cherished part of the Lamplighter community, with animals present on campus since the School’s founding at a farmhouse on Churchill Way in 1953.
Each year, students welcome new farm animals to campus, continuing a long-standing tradition of learning through connection with animals and nature. In recent years, campus animals have included cows, pigs, donkeys, goats, ponies, and llamas.
In addition, the adjacent Junkins Family Chicken Coop is home to 30–40 chickens cared for by the Senior class through the Lamplighter Layers program, providing students with hands-on responsibility and learning opportunities.

Lamplighter Chickens
Chickens are an integral part of the Lamplighter program, giving students across grade levels opportunities to take part in their care and learn through hands-on responsibility.

Pre-K and Kindergarten
Pre-K and Kindergarten students proudly help care for the chickens, including the favorite task of feeding them Cheerios.

Third Grade
At the end of third grade, students take part in the special tradition of transferring the baby chicks from the incubator to the chicken coop, where the flock will live for the coming year.

Fourth Grade
As leaders of the School, Lamplighter Seniors take ownership of the Lamplighter Layers Corporation, caring for the chickens, collecting eggs, and managing egg sales as part of the student-run business.
