Class Descriptions

Acoustic Guitar
This group is designed for beginning students who want to learn to play acoustic guitar. Students will learn to read music, play from a chord sheet, play from tabs, learn basic knowledge of music theory, play with an ensemble in a variety of styles, develop instrumental technique, and perform at school. Students are required to bring their own instrument to class.
 
Adventures with STEM Using Lego

Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects and use special pieces to create your own unique designs. New and returning students can explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system.

Have fun with chemistry! Make a crystal garden, synthesize your own slime, learn about our solar system by making a comet with everyday items, and have a shocking time with a Van de Graaff generator by experiencing lightning up close.

If you love Shark Tank, this empowering program is for you! Join other
intrepid students and develop a business plan for your own business idea.
You will learn to take risks and persevere while making business-like
decisions about strategy, marketing, and finance (optional activities include
building a website and designing business cards). Students build confidence
"learning by doing" and make their pitch presentations on the last day!
 
Cheerful Hearts

Hands on your hips, smile on your lips, cheer in your heart…ready to start! The goal of this class is to enable young students to realize their potential while enhancing confidence and self-esteem. This class will focus on basic skills and moves in dance and cheer. Students will learn the importance of teamwork and how to develop positive social interactions.

Classical Ballet

This class lays a foundation for those students who are ready to learn the principles and beginning technique of ballet and music theatre through introducing basic beginning ballet steps in center time and across the floor. Basic stretches and terminology will also be introduced. All of this is presented through a fun and imaginative teaching style along with engaging music so that the students can learn in a creative but disciplined setting. Introduction of the barre as well as simple choreography is also taught to introduce students to the next level and prepare them for a musical dance performance.

Cooking around the world

Do you love to cook? Do you want to know more about other cultures? In this unique cooking class, students will learn new recipes, practice food safety, and see how we use math in the kitchen! We’ll make Japanese Onigiri, and other finger foods from all over the world!

Learn the art and science of sound engineering with professionals from the field. Students will have hands-on practice connecting PA systems, running a mixing board, and creating their own beats, sounds, and style through the use of software-based virtual instruments, setting up a stage for a performance. This class culminates with a live performance, fully mixed by course students. 

exploring mandarin

Students will use their eyes, ears, hands, mouths (and tastebuds!) to gain an introductory understanding of Chinese language and culture. Students will learn the basics of speaking Mandarin and writing characters, practice simple words and phrases, and, most importantly, nurture enthusiasm for Chinese culture and traditions with lots of fun hands-on crafts.

From Disney to Broadway

See your child take the big stage! In this class, students explore what it takes to be a Broadway star. By the end of our time together, your child will grow in knowledge and confidence showcased in a fabulous final performance. Sing your favorite songs from Disney to Broadway. Play your favorite characters and create fun scenes in a group. Learn basic dance moves that the stars use onstage.

Funny Farmers

Do you like to laugh? Do you like making other people laugh? The Funny Farmers is just for you. It’s Lamplighter’s own version of Saturday Night Live! As always, there is a special end of semester performance.

Garage Band

This course is for students who want to learn about making music using multiple types of instruments, including digital instruments. Students will learn to compose music by using backing tracks, mixing live sound, recording live music, and creating beats. We will work primarily with the GarageBand app on the iPad to make projects but will also work with other apps and technologies associated with music making in the 21st century. Students can create their own sound, style, and songs all while having fun! No previous experience is required.

Interested in drawing, art, or design? In this class, students will learn how to use doodling skills "for real," by working on projects for local nonprofits or small businesses. Students will create designs that will be seen by thousands, all while helping organizations with a good cause!

growing Up With gardens

This fun class incorporates stories, science, and gardening with hands-on opportunities for discovery and learning about the lifecycle of plants and their purpose in providing food for people and wildlife. Lessons about fruits and vegetables are chosen carefully so children have opportunities to prepare safe, healthy snacks from the garden. 

Hola Amigos

Join us in a fun, interactive, enriching environment for children to learn and become confident Spanish speakers. Every class begins with our mascot, Paulina Parrot, who greets the kids and reveals the emphasis of the day. The class emphasis changes weekly and incorporates age appropriate songs, dance, crafts, games, and conversation to ensure every child remains engaged throughout the lesson. Each class will provide a review of the previous lessons to ensure the children retain their knowledge and continue to build confidence and vocabulary.

Intro to Chess

This class is for younger students with little or no chess experience that want to learn how to play the game. Chess is a wonderful journey of learning and can help with many social and academic endeavors. Students will learn how the pieces move, the basic rules and objectives and how to play a full game to checkmate. Begin a lifetime of learning today!

junior engineering

Children are fascinated by lights and sounds but often don’t know much about the circuits and electronics behind them. The lessons will allow students to have fun while acquiring pertinent vocabulary and conceptual understanding in the field of engineering. Over the course of the semester, we will cover the basics of a variety of engineering topics including electricity, circuitry, and magnetism while inspiring students to become tomorrow’s problem solvers.

Lamplighter Chess

This class is for students with some chess experience and are interested in improving their skills. Chess is one of the best activities for young learners wanting to put down the electronics and play with friends. Students will learn about chess strategies, the history of the game, and of course play many games with their friends.

Leadership & Music – Tiny Tot

Develop your child’s leadership skills through presenting, singing and music. Kids build confidence in themselves during our “Learn & Lead” program. Our experience-driven method transforms shy kids into confident kids as they perform on stage in a warm and encouraging environment.

Learn grow eat go

Learn Grow Eat Go grows good kids through an interdisciplinary program combining academic achievement, gardening, nutrient-dense food experiences, physical activity, and school engagement. Students will learn about nutrition through garden and classroom based experiences.

Minecraft engineering using lego

Venture into the world of Minecraft in our unique LEGO experience. Get ready to build your base, modify your tools, use your Minecart to harvest raw resources, and battle to stop the Ender Dragon from ending the world. Come explore the endless possibilities of LEGO with a trained Play-Well instructor.

My first lemonade stand
Let's sell lemonade! Young students become "lemonade entrepreneurs"
and learn how to make yummy lemonade and earn money selling it!
From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting
with recipes, students will have fun while developing business savvy. As an
optional showcase event, students launch their lemonade stand to raise
money for a charity they select!
 
nasa - academy of space explorers

Blast-off on knowledge of flight! This class is an exciting study of rockets. Students will build their own rockets and planes, experiment with propulsion systems, and launch and recover rockets. Each session allows students to create amazing space items to take home.

n.i.c.e. girls

The goal of the class is to develop, encourage, and promote well-rounded and mature young girls through a series of experiences that are specific to individual and whole group growth. Participants will learn conflict resolution skills, learn teamwork, and build confidence/self-esteem.

Pass the Manners

Mrs. McVeigh’s Manners has taught thousands of children manners in a fun and interactive way. You will be surprised how much your child will retain through our interactive lessons, workbooks, original storybooks and games. Class topics will include: Appearance and Meeting and Greeting; Titles and Acknowledging People; Conversations and Good Listener; Table Manners and How to Set a Table; Utensils and Eating at School; Restaurant and Balanced and Polite Eating; Respect and Rude; Trick or Treat, School (Field Trip) Bus; Mistakes and Thank You Notes; It’s Not All About YOU and Sad Occasions; Inviting People and Good Guest/Host; Parties Arriving and Parties Departing; Entertaining and Gifts; and Cultural Events.

Print making

Explore Printmaking! If you enjoy doing art projects using a variety of materials, then this Night Light Class is for you! We will use our creative and artistic side to transfer an image from one surface to another using a variety of materials like potatoes, raised foam, bubble wrap, yarn… basically any object we can get our sticky fingers on! 

Private guitar/ukulele | piano | voice

Private music lessons are 30 minutes in length and are offered from 4:45 – 5:15 p.m. following regular NightLight classes. Students must enroll in a 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. NightLight class in order to participate in private music lessons.

Classes are taught by acclaimed concert artists and teachers from the DFW Institute of Musical Advancement (DIMATexas). Children will divide their time between solo lessons with their respective instrument/voice, as well as learning music theory and music history. They will prepare a solo and duo memorized repertoire. Students will have access to beautiful recitals, fun festivals, and concerts, while developing their self-esteem and building confidence. Instructors are easy to get in touch with, via email or text, and are very responsive to the parent's, and children's specific needs. Teachers are comfortable teaching at Pre-K level and higher. Children are taught easy lullabies, memorization techniques, reading skills, and lively rhythms to aid their learning. Soon, your children will be performing well-known melodies, for all the family to enjoy. The most important thing is to make expressive, beautiful music, while having fun learning a new instrument!

quill soccer academy

This class focuses on skill development, followed by games and fun with the soccer ball. The coaching staff consists of playing experience including collegiate national championships, USA national team caps, and former collegiate coaches. The goal is to develop a passion while fostering a love for the game, teamwork, and improvement.

robotics: making your legos come alive

The StemTree robotics program uses the wonder and genius of robots to inspire students to create, problem solve, and think out of the box. After their builds are complete, students add coding elements to make their creations come to life. Throughout the course of the semester, students will rotate between mini-units in two different LEGO® Education sets – WeDo 2.0 and SPIKE Essential – to learn a variety of engineering and building concepts in themes including Awesome Animals, Great Adventures, Exploring Space, and Amazing Amusement Park!

So You Wanna Be a Rockstar?

Do you think you have what it takes to be a ROCKSTAR? In this class, you will learn the ins and outs of being a rockstar and what kind of hard work it takes to get there. We will explore a wide variety of music and learn about past and present rockstars and the history of their music.

storytime science

Enjoy classic and new storytime books while exploring fun science projects related to each story. Students will love learning engineering principles while building a house to protect the Three Little Pigs, watching a real Hungry Caterpillar go through its life cycle, growing ice crystals for a Snowy Day, and more.

Strengthening & Conditioning

Each class is an exciting, age-appropriate mix of different sports and their skills along with fun speed, strength, and agility games and activities. Students will experience great success through perseverance and goal setting no matter their athletic ability. Sportsmanship, respect, and kindness are also valuable components of a PowerKids experience!

Ukulele

This group is designed for students who want to play ukulele and later the guitar. This course will prepare students to play their instrument with an ensemble in a variety of styles, developing instrumental technique, and culminating with a performance at the end of the semester. Students are required to bring their own ukulele instrument.

Who is Doctor Who?

The world-famous Lamplighter Doctor Who club continues its operations with the 12th Season of Doctor who, as well as some favorite classic episodes! We’ll write new entries into the ever-growing Lamplighter episode guide, have some deep dive discussions about the show, and (hopefully) meet some WHO celebs at the Dallas Fan Expo!

Yippe Yi Yoga

Let’s play yoga! Students will have fun learning yoga poses and breathing techniques through stories and games. Children will develop strength and flexibility, increase focus and concentration, build self-esteem and confidence, and learn how to relax with personalized lavender eye pillows!
